Begin Center Jerusalem

The Menachem Begin Heritage Center, Begin Center Jerusalem is the official state memorial project in Jerusalem intended preserve the achievements and legacy of Menachem Begin and serve as a Research Institute of the Struggle for the Independence of Israel and its future security and development.

The Menachem Begin Heritage Center is a living memorial and the nation’s tribute to a courageous fighter and fearless leader who worked for the freedom, future and security of the Jewish People in its own land. It was established by Israel’s Knesset in March 1998 when the Menachem Begin Commemoration Law was passed. The Center is located on the Hinnom Ridge, overlooking the Old City of Jerusalem.

The Menachem Begin Heritage Center Museum

Menachem Begin, 1913-1992, filled many leadership roles in his life including: Pre-War Zionist Youth Leader; Prisoner of Zion; Commander of the Irgun Zvai Leumi resistance underground; Leader of the Parliamentary Opposition; Minister in the 1967 Government of National Unity; Sixth Prime Minister of Israel; initiator of Project Renewal and the Ethiopian Immigration; expanded settlement of the Land of Israel; furthered the Soviet Jewry Struggle; strengthened Israel’s defense and security; concluded a peace with Egypt and was awarded the Noble Peace Prize.

The Begin Center Jerusalem includes the following units and departments: • Archives • Research Institute • Museum • Exhibits • Bible Study Learning Center and Synagogue • Auditorium • Junior Knesset Educational Unit • Library • Seminar Facilities and other features.

The tour of the museum starts in the streets of Brisk, the town where Begin was born, continues to Warsaw where he studied, and in Vilna where he was arrested and sent to a Soviet prison camp. From there visitors continue to the secret headquarters of the Irgun where actions were planned against the British Mandatory government. Then on to the period when Begin was the leader of the Opposition, where visitors may experience the main events that shaped the State of Israel, be part of the election rally listening to Begin’s famous speeches, and be present on the eve of the Likud victory in 1977. Visitors finish the tour in a spectacular audio-visual display summarizing Menachem Begin’s role as the 6th Prime Minister of Israel. The Menachem Begin Heritage Center Museum is rich in content and historical drama. You can see the reconstruction of Menachem Begin’s private residence at 1 Rosenbaum Street, Tel Aviv; rare documents; recently discovered films and pictures; and much more.
